Sawyer (played by Josh Holloway)
Full Name: James Ford

Reason for trip:
Deported for headbutting an Australian cabinet minister
Meaning of the name: Tom Sawyer from Mark Twain's Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Both Tom Sawyer and James Sawyer are con men. His real name is "James Ford", which is also the name of a river pirate and gang leader from Illinois at the turn of the 19th century.
Profession: Con man
A native of Tennessee, Sawyer is a con man who has taken on the alias of the con-man, Frank Sawyer, who was responsible for the destruction of his family. Sawyer, whose real name is James Ford, is known for collecting and hoarding items from the plane crash and for being the resident smart-talking rebel on the island. Along with Shannon, he is one of the island's most prolific sources of colorful, often insulting nicknames for other castaway's and island locations. These mannerisms make him easily hated and despised by most of the islanders, although it eventually transpires that he purposely incites others into hostility against him; Kate eventually uncovers his tragic past and forces him to admit his inferiority complex, and Michael, noting that the otherwise entirely self-centered Sawyer seems eager to volunteer for dangerous tasks, theorizes he may be suicidal.

Initially Sawyer is one of Kate's most aggressive suitors, making various crude advances against her, but as time passes on the two seem to develop a genuine friendship, both sharing a background as criminals and fugitives tormented by guilt. He kills time on the island by reading books salvaged from the plane, but this has caused him to develop hyperopia, forcing Sayid to make him a pair of reading glasses. His voice also seems to entertain and comfort Claire's baby.

As the series unfolds we learn that the original Sawyer had an affair with the young James Ford's mother in order to con his family out of their life savings, prompting his father to murder his mother and then commit suicide out of grief. Vowing revenge, in an ironic twist Ford found himself in financial trouble and was sucked into the world of con artistry himself, adopting Frank Sawyer's profession and even his specific modus operandi to survive, using his looks to seduce women and divide families. He takes the original Sawyer's name as an alias as a symbol of his own self-loathing.

Before the crash, James was told that the man who ruined his childhood, the same man from whom he took his alias Frank Sawyer, was in Australia. James went there and killed him only to find out he had been set up and the man he killed was not Frank Sawyer. Before making his final decision to kill who he thought was "Frank Sawyer", Sawyer met a man in a bar whom, after the crash, he realized was Christian Sheppard, Jack's own father. Sawyer did not reveal this to any of the other survivors until Exodus: Part 1.

In Boone's flashback, Boone is sitting in a police station when two police men drag in Sawyer, who is not cooperating. This was later revealed to be because of Sawyer's participation in a bar fight, and because of that he was ordered to return to the United States, thus ending up on the fateful flight. A policeman informed Sawyer that the man he had head-butted in the bar fight was the Australian Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. Sawyer was deported from Australia and banned from ever returning. Presumedly the Australian authorities, who were aware of Sawyer's real identity, would have deported him under his real name. If so, it has not been explained how Hurley, who had the passenger manifest list, was unaware that Sawyer was an alias, though it could be assumed that the manifest listed Sawyer as James "Sawyer" Ford, and Hurley who also uses a nickname, decided to stay quiet about Sawyer's real name.

When Sawyer, Jin, Michael, and Walt meet another boat at sea whose passengers want Walt to come with them, Sawyer pulls the gun given to him by Jack before the raft left. However, he is apparently shot by a man in the other boat, and falls in the water. Jin dives after him, but it is unclear what happened to either of them.

About Josh Holloway:
Josh Holloway has caught Hollywood by storm with his unassuming style and southern charm, announcing his arrival on ABC's "Lost."

He has just signed for his first role on the big screen as the lead in the new Gold Circle Films thriller, "Whisper." Holloway will play a convict who kidnaps a young boy in this supernatural tale set in New England.

Holloway began his career lighting up the runway and fashion magazines, but soon realized that his calling was to the performing arts. He returned to Los Angeles after a stint in New York and began lighting up the small screen with appearances on "CSI" and "Navy NCIS." He garnered praise and considerable attention for his performance in the title role of the Sci-Fi Channel's original movie, "Sabretooth." Developing his craft further, Holloway appeared in the feature film "Doctor Benny" and also enjoyed success in the Indy world, appearing in such films as "Mi Amigo," "Moving August" and "Cold Heart," with Nastassja Kinski.

Holloway is a born adrenaline junkie, longing for the thrill of extreme sports like skydiving, snowboarding and motocross. He is also known to tone it down on occasion by sailing and playing guitar. He currently resides in Hawaii with his wife, Yessica.

Jack (played by Matthew Fox)
Full Name:
Dr. Jack Sheppard

Reason for trip: Returning his father's body to the United States
Meaning of the name: The group's shepherd, or leader.
Profession: Spinal surgeon at St. Sebastian Hospital

Jack Sheppard is a neurosurgeon who lived in the United States of America. It is his awakening in the jungle that opens the series in the first scene of the pilot episode. After arriving on the Island, Jack takes on a critical leadership role, and is looked to by most of the remaining survivors for guidance. His leadership circle includes John Locke and Sayid, and he is close friends with Hurley, Charlie, and Rose. He has a close friendship with Kate, whom he meets immediately after the crash. He develops a long-running rivalry with Sawyer, based partly on his friendship with Kate, whom Sawyer despises and distrusts. By the end of the first season, Jack and Locke have developed a rivalry based on their differing interpretations of the island and the crash, with Locke telling Jack that he (Locke) is a "man of faith" whereas Jack is a man of science.

In Do No Harm he was revealed to have been married to Sarah, a former patient of his. However, in the flashback in Exodus: Part 1 just before boarding the flight, he did not wear a wedding ring and said he was no longer married.

Some time prior to the flight, Jack discovered his father, Dr. Christian Sheppard, operating on a woman while under the influence of alcohol; he had created an untenable situation in the operating room. Jack relieved his father from the surgery, but was unable to repair the damage, and the woman died. Initially, Jack's father played on his son's sense of respect and family, and successfully convinced Jack to sign off on a report stating that the woman simply was beyond medical assistance. However, during the medical inquiry into the patient's death, Jack discovered that the woman was pregnant, a detail his father had neglected to mention. Unable to remain quiet, Jack revealed what really happened to the inquiry board. This led to the end of his father's medical career, with Christian falling into a depression, and eventually fleeing to Sydney.

Jack was essentially ordered by his mother to go to Sydney and find Christian. While there, Jack learned that his father had died while on an alcoholic binge. Forced to bring his father home for burial, Jack boarded Flight 815 with his father's casket in tow. He meets Locke on the flight, and sits in a window seat across the aisle from Rose. Just prior to the crash, he converses with Rose, whose husband has left for the lavatory, comforting her during the turbulence. He blacked out prior to the disintegration of the aircraft and did not see the tail section break off. He was evidently thrown clear of the wreckage into the jungle.

In the immediate wake of the crash, he administers and organizes first aid to numerous survivors around the burning wreckage. His own injuries consist of a gash on his back, which he cannot sew himself, and thus drafts Kate to sew the stitches. The scene marks the beginning of their friendship. He leads the initial expedition into the jungle to find the nose of the aircraft and fetch the transceiver. Along with Kate, he witnesses the mysterious fatal snatching of the pilot by the "Monster."

Just before Sawyer boards the raft, he makes peace with Jack and reveals to him that he had met Jack's father in a bar in Australia, and Jack's father told him how proud he was of his son, but how he wasn't brave enough to tell Jack himself. It was shortly thereafter that Christian died of alcohol poisoning.

Jack and Locke lead the expedition into the jungle at the end of the first season to find the dynamite aboard the "Black Rock" in order to blow open the hatch Locke has located. Despite Locke's insistence to "let him go", Jack saves Locke from being pulled into the hole by the "Monster". John Locke's belief in a supernatural force guiding the Survivors, Jack is worried that Locke may become dangerous now that the hatch has been blown open; he had Kate affirm that she "had his back" in case of such a "Locke problem."

About Matthew Fox:
Matthew Fox is an actor cut from the proverbial leading man cloth, carrying himself with strong charisma and a powerful presence.

Fox starred in the hugely successful series "Party of Five," winner of the 1996 Golden Globe for Best Drama. His other numerous credits include a starring role in the critically acclaimed series "Haunted," and the made-for-television movie "Behind the Mask," in which he starred opposite Donald Sutherland.

Hailing from a ranch in Wyoming, where his family raised horses and barley, Fox enjoyed the all-American upbringing that led him to play football at Columbia University, where he also studied economics. With every intent of being a successful Wall Street broker, Fox instead was swayed to modeling, which led to some commercial spots, and he has been sold on acting ever since.

Boone (played by Ian Somerhalder)
Full Name:
Boone Carlyle

Reason for trip: Returning after Shannon's "rescue" from abusive boyfriend
Meaning of the name: Shannon referred to him as "God's gift to humanity". A boon is a gift.
Profession: Works in his mother's international bridal business, headquartered in Malibu, CA
Island relationship: Brother of Shannon
Health Status: DECEASED died from injuries sustained in a fall

Boone Carlyle was the step-brother of Shannon and chief operating officer of his mother's wedding businesses. He had mixed feelings about his step-sister, being repulsed at his discovery that she has tricked him to get money by pretending to need it to get away from abusive men. However, Shannon later admitted that she was aware that Boone had actually been in love with her.

Boone became the protege of John Locke, having initially followed him to hunt for Charlie and Claire after they had been kidnapped by Ethan Rom, then discovering and digging up the metal hatch to a mysterious pod-- the existence of which Locke swore him to secrecy, claiming that the others were not ready to know about it, and instead to tell them they were "hunting for boar." Locke was also instrumental in changing Boone's perception of his relationship with his step-sister. In Deus Ex Machina Locke has a vision-dream, in which Boone repeats the phrase, "Theresa falls up the stairs; Theresa falls down the stairs." Boone reveals that Theresa had been his nanny as a child, upon whom he took out his frustration at the absence of his mother. She fell to her death down the stairs in his house while responding to his summons. The same dream led to the "sign" from the island of a small airplane crashed in the forest, which the two followed to find a heroin runner's Beechcraft stuck in the trees.

Boone died in Do No Harm of wounds sustained from falling out of a tree in the crashed airplane discovered in the previous episode.

Boone frequently wore a t-shirt with the Chinese characters meaning 84, which are two of the unlucky Numbers that frequently appear throughout the show. This was also the shirt that Boone was wearing in Locke's vision of him, and the shirt he wore when he died.

According to Ian Somerhalder, Boone's last name is Carlyle, and not Carlisle as previously thought. This would make him the third character, after John Locke (John Locke) and Danielle Rousseau (Jean-Jacques Rousseau) to be named after an Enlightenment philosopher, since his surname is spelled the same way as Thomas Carlyle's.

About Ian Somerhalder:
The son of a massage therapist and a building contractor, Somerhalder was born and raised in the small southern town of Covington, LA. Boating, swimming, fishing and training horses filled much of his recreational time growing up, as did the school drama club and performing with the local theater group. With his mother's encouragement, at age 10 he began a modeling career that took him to New York each summer. By junior high, he opted to put modeling on the back burner and focus more on sports and school. A few years later, when the opportunity to model in Europe arose, Somerhalder grabbed it, embarking on an enriching path of work, travel and study that took him to cities including Paris, Milan and London. At 17, he began studying acting in New York, and by 19 had committed himself to the craft, working with preeminent acting coach William Esper. His fate was sealed while working as an extra in a club scene in the feature film Black & White. A talent manager visiting a client on the set spotted Somerhalder in a crowd scene of 400 and immediately signed him for representation. Happy to be anchored in New York, Somerhalder spends much of his time studying acting, writing and practicing yoga. His recreational interests include water and snow skiing and horseback riding.

Locke (played by Terry O'Quinn)
Full Name:
John Locke

Reason for trip: Rejected from walkabout tour of Outback
Origin of Name: John Locke, 17th century political philosopher.
Profession: Regional collections supervisor for a box company
Prior to the flight, John Locke led a lonely existence as a middle manager at a box company in Tustin, California, where he was constantly belittled by a snide (and younger) higher-up for his interests in wargaming and survivalism. The company he worked for may actually be owned by Hurley. Most critically, Locke was a paraplegic-- apparently for the preceding four years-- the reasons for which have not yet been revealed. He came to Australia hoping to fulfill his dream of taking part in a Walkabout, but when he was discovered to be disabled, Locke was forced off the tour and sent back to the United States on the doomed flight. After the crash, however, he miraculously recovered the use of his legs.

Locke related to Sawyer that as a child, he and his sister were raised by a foster mother. When his sister died, his foster mother blamed herself, and sunk into depression. A few months later, a dog came into their house and his foster mother began to feel better. The dog even slept in his sister's bed, leading Locke's foster mother to believe that the dog was the sister reincarnated. When asked whether he felt the same, he replied, "That's just silly."

In Deus Ex Machina, his real mother is revealed to be Emily Annabeth Locke (Swoosie Kurtz), who may have been a drug addict and have psychological problems. She made a sudden appearance when John was already an adult, claiming that his birth was part of a greater plan, that he had no father and was "immaculately conceived." This led to Locke hiring a private investigator to track down his actual biological father, who turned out to be a wealthy hunter named Anthony Cooper (Kevin Tighe.) Cooper seemed to take his newfound son under his wing, teaching him to be a sportsman. However, he was actually laying the groundwork to con Locke into donating his kidney, which Cooper desperately needed. Once the operation was completed, Cooper left the hospital and ordered his security guard not to admit Locke back into his estate. Locke was crushed by the revelation that he had been emotionally manipulated.

On the Island, Locke has demonstrated his skills as a hunter, as well as sort of spiritual leader. He appears to have a connection to the Island itself, to which he ascribes mystical powers, claiming "I've looked into the eye of this island, and what I saw was beautiful." He kept secret his findings and revelations from nearly all, except for his apparent acolyte Boone Carlyle, with whom he often explored the Island's jungles. During one such exploration, the two came across a metal hatch with a glass window, which they unsuccessfully tried to force open or break. Later, a seeming vision led the two to a crashed Beechcraft airplane stuck in trees. When Boone climbed into the cockpit, the plane fell to the ground, crushing Boone and eventually leading to his death. Because Locke initially lied about how Boone's injuries were received, the death has driven a wedge between some of the survivors and Locke-- and both Jack Sheppard and Boone's step-sister, Shannon hold him responsible for Boone's death.

In The Greater Good, after showing Sayid the location of the Beechcraft, Locke confessed that he was the one who sabotaged the jury-rigged communication equipment that Sayid used to search for the Island's mysterious radio transmitter. Later, in retaliation for her brother's death, Shannon tried to shoot Locke, but due to the intervention of Sayid, the bullet only grazed his temple.

While he had mainly been connected to Boone, Locke developed a friendship with Walt Lloyd early on, teaching him backgammon and demonstrating knife throwing to him. He helped Charlie Pace work through his heroin addiction, and built a cradle with Claire for her baby. He also shares a mutual respect with Sayid. Other survivors are wary of Locke, due in part to his mysterious comings and goings and collection of hunting knives, which he had transported with him intending to use on a walkabout of the Australian Outback.

Locke is frequently connected with games. He plays backgammon with Walt, demonstrates Mouse Trap to a child in a flashback scene in Deus Ex Machina, discusses Operation with Jack while handling dynamite, and plays some sort of war game with a co-worker in Walkabout.

In Exodus Part 2, with the help of Jack and Kate, Locke blew the hatch open with dynamite. Hurley, seeing the "cursed numbers" engraved in the metal, tried to stop him from lighting the fuse, but Locke was determined to set off the explosion. Earlier, when asked what he believed to be within the hatch, he replied, "I think Hope's inside." This is presumably a reference to Pandora's Box.

About Terry O'Quinn:

Terry O'Quinn's impressive gallery of film and television characters includes many diverse roles. He rose to prominence as the outwardly gentle but actually maniacal master of the house in Joseph Ruben's chilling "The Stepfather." Though he went on to play leads in other films like "Prisoners of the Sun" and "The Forgotten One," his weight was more effectively felt in supporting roles, for example as Howard Hughes in Disney's "The Rocketeer."

Other feature film credits include "Old School," "The X-Files: Fight the Future," "Primal Fear," "Ghosts of Mississippi," "Tombstone," "Blind Fury," "Young Guns," "Black Widow," "Heaven's Gate" and "Places in the Heart."

On television O'Quinn had starring roles in "Millennium" and "Harsh Realm," with recurring roles on "The West Wing," "Alias" and "Jag." He has guest starred on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," "The X-Files" and "Roswell."

On Broadway O'Quinn appeared in "Foxfire" and "Curse of the Aching Heart," and Off-Broadway in "Richard III."
