There's also a good ASIC guide on http://nppp.jpl.nasa.gov/asic .... could though be redundant in the context of this project ...

ah ... one more thing that came to mind .... If the main reason for this project was to learn, why not to do so by downloading assorted SoC cores off www.OpenCores.com, and try to generate a useful product out of 'em ...

OK. But our primary goal is to design the cpu itself rather than the application.
Let's discuss what posibilites do we have.
And which core from the opencores.org do you prefer and why?

Actually I have written a Virtual Machine for emulating of RISC type machines (based on classic MIPS32 architecture). This tool can help us during the design process ...
